How to Eat Caviar
Caviar is easily considered to be one of the most coveted delicacies in the culinary world. It can be intimidating for someone first entering the world of caviar because of its high cost and class. It is considered a luxury food, however, many people are unaware of how to properly consume caviar. Here is a guide for our recommendation of storing, serving, consuming, and pairing caviar.
Storing and Serving Caviar
Caviar must be stored in a very cold environment, around 28-35 degrees fahrenheit, to ensure its quality. Because heat rises, an optimal place to store the caviar would be at the coldest part of the fridge which would be the bottom of the fridge near the back. It should be served in the tin while nestled in a bowl of ice. Avoid using metal utensils when scooping the caviar as it may alter the quality of the eggs and result in a metallic taste. We suggest using our mother of pearl spoons in order to savor the true taste of the caviar and avoid tainting its quality. Upon opening, it is best that the caviar is consumed immediately.
Caviar is a delicacy that can be consumed as either a garnish or a spread. It is extremely versatile and can be eaten with almost any dish. Caviar is most commonly spread on lightly buttered bread, unsalted crackers, or dry toast. We first suggest consuming the caviar as is in order to relish its true flavor without altering the taste. Eating the caviar beads by itself can help to cherish and savor the flavor of this high delicacy product. Because of its high delicacy, it is suggested to consume each bite in small portions, typically about ½ teaspoon.
Our Favorite Caviar Pairings
Here are some other examples of what caviar can be consumed with:
Homemade Blinis topped with Crème Fraiche and garnished with caviar. Blinis are small pancakes or crepes typically made with buckwheat or wheat flour. This is a popular Russian pairing that is most commonly served as an appetizer.
Garnish the caviar on top of fresh oysters for a luxe pairing. This is one of the most favored ways of consuming caviar. Enhance its flavor with fresh lemon juice from a lemon wedge.
A slice of cucumber for a refreshing taste. The natural crisp from the cucumber will complement the burst of flavor from the caviar beads.
Lay a small bed of caviar on top of a thin piece of white chocolate to create an unexpected, decadent combination.
Pairing the caviar with vodka or champagne is highly favorable as well. The alcohol will cleanse your palette in order to enhance all the flavors.
A traditional way to serve caviar as a garnish would be on top of a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to consuming caviar, there is no right or wrong way of eating caviar, it just depends on personal preference. Share your favorite caviar pairings by tagging @astrea_caviar on Instagram for a chance to be featured!
